Mike Vickery Named Pelham High School Head Football Coach

Pelham City Schools is pleased to announce Mike Vickery will join Pelham High School as its next head football coach. Vickery brings 21 years coaching experience, including the past six seasons as a head coach at Northridge High School and 12 seasons as an offensive coordinator/position coach at Daphne High School. 

Kim Kiel, Pelham City Schools Director of Athletics and Pelham High School Principal, Dr. Scott Coefield, Superintendent, and Dr. Chuck Ledbetter, future Superintendent conducted the coaching search intent on finding an outstanding leader and coach with a vision for program development and student-athlete success on and off the field. 

“Coach Vickery has dedicated his career to investing in the lives of young men through the sport of football. His experiences have prepared him to lead our football program and build on the legacy left by Coach Causey,” said Kim Kiel. 

In his most recent experience at Northridge, Vickery has improved the team culture and the on the field product every year. His teams have gone 7-3 the last two seasons, making the AHSAA playoffs each year. During Vickery’s tenure at Daphne High School, the football program won or shared 10 Region Championships and participated in two 6A Championship games, earning the 6A State Championship Title in 2010. 

When Vickery speaks of his plan for Pelham, he says “We will go to work immediately to be the most physical and disciplined program we can possibly be. We’ll accomplish our goals with tremendous effort and a tireless work ethic. We want our players to be the best version of themselves on and off the field. We believe if we do things the right way, the Pelham Way, success will take care of itself. We can’t wait to get started!”

Vickery is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Human Performance. At the University of Alabama, he lettered in football and was an undergraduate assistant. He earned his Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of South Alabama and holds certifications in Social Science and Physical Education. 

Vickery is meeting Pelham players, coaches, parents, and community members on Wednesday evening in the school's field house following the Pelham City Schools special called board meeting. School system leaders are eager to introduce Coach Vickery to the Pelham family. “His values and commitment to excellence are aligned with those of our school system and community. He’s a great coach with high character that truly fits the Pelham culture,” says Kiel.
